Rick Boucher, D-Va., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, is drafting a bill that would impose broad new rules on Web sites and advertisers. He is trying to protect consumers and ensure what type of information companies collect when people go online and browse websites.

Key points of upcomming bill:
- Websites will need to get user approval if they share information outside advertising network.
- Opt-in rule will be applied to websites which collect social security numbers, medial information, and other information.
- Disclosure of information websites collect from visitors.
- Regulation on who can access personal information.
It is not a secret that companies use different techniques to track ip information and see what people search, read, click, share, or view online. It is still a big consern on how this information being used and who got access to this information. While some web marketers already started to panic, Rick Boucher said: “Our goal is not to hinder online advertising”, he added that new bill will help to protect consumer from illegal activities which violate privacy and will bring people tryst to a websites and information they access online.
Hopefully it won’t hurt online advertising industry but will tie handsthose who collect and share information about medical records, income, sexual orientation, privacy information etc.
