But what if you just created a blog and there are not a lot of readers yet, or your field is very competitive. Link building can send more visitors and improve search engine traffic.

During the link building process you should not spam, submit blog in low quality directories, or use companies which offer “millions links for few bucks”. There are a lot of good ways to get quality link to your blog and improve visibility.
Old fashion way:
- Directory submission is not dead yet (as some web marketers suggest). Among thousand directories you can still find some good ones with pages indexed by Google and strict approval policy. Go for niche or local directories to find more quality ones.
- Blog directories, pretty much the same as industry niche directories but for bloggers.
- Article submission works when you contribute valuable content to high traffic article directories like EzineArticles, Work, or Buzzle.
- Link exchange work if you do it only with few related sites, unlimited link exchange with low quality sites can affect SERPS.
- Participate in forums and message boards if you contribute good posts and quality content.
- Submit your blog in DMOZ but remember that first of all you have to establish yourself as a good writer and your blog as valuable resource.
Socialize:
- Blogroll exchange with other bloggers when you post enough and establish your blog. Good bloggers don’t exchange blogroll links with everyone.
- Link other blogs from your posts.

- Google your competitors, check their Twitter, visit Technorati to find which social networks they use and who link them.
